If that's the look they're going for with Barnabas, this movie is
going to sink like a lead balloon. Barnabas is supposed to be a
little sexy, and there's nothing sexy about that look. He looks more
Willy Wonka than Sweeney Todd (which was the look I was hoping for -
off-kilter but not bizarre.)

Just a wild guess but maybe this is his daytime outdoors look,
suggesting that vampires need a lot of suntan lotion.

That's the only sensible explanation, reinforced by the sunglasses.

It does remind me of MJ. This is not, however, the look of Barnabas.

It may be the latter, but in the original Dark Shadows mythos, Barnabas
could not go outside in the daytime without dying. Also, Barnabas never
looked pale at all. He looked completely human unless he showed his teeth.

I would point out, however, that makeup does not look the same under
different light sources. It's entirely possible we're seeing him in a light
where he was not meant to be in that particular makeup.

Still looks like clown makeup to me.

Besides, I'm not sure sunscreen would help. It would depend on what part of
the suns rays does in vampires.

These days they have a lot of very good sunscreens that blend into the
skin. But for quite a while, the only really effective sunblock
contained LARGE particles of zinc oxide - which DID make it pretty
much look like white clown makeup. Usually it was only used on the
nose of a lifeguard, but I could definitely see it being used over the
entire body by a vampire. Now they use tiny particles of ZnO and it
doesn't appear white anymore.

From the wikipedia article:

Zinc oxide can be used in ointments, creams, and lotions to protect
against sunburn and other damage to the skin caused by ultraviolet
light (see sunscreen). It is the broadest spectrum UVA and UVB
reflector that is approved for use as a sunscreen by the FDA, and is
completely photostable. When used as an ingredient in sunscreen, zinc
oxide sits on the skin’s surface i.e. is not absorbed into the skin,
and blocks both UVA (320–400 nm) and UVB (280–320 nm) rays of
ultraviolet light. Because zinc oxide (and the other most common
physical sunscreen, titanium dioxide) are not absorbed into the skin,
they are nonirritating and nonallergenic.

Many sunscreens use nano-sized zinc oxide (along with nano titanium
dioxide) because such small particles do not scatter light and
therefore do not appear white.

It also washes off (or sweats off) after a while, despite claims to the
contrary. Also, how much it blocks of any spectrum of light depends on what
kind you buy, and what the spf level is. It's possible to get a tan while
wearing sunscreen. I've done it. So it can't be blocking all the light,
visible or otherwise.

I will note that he didn't look like that in the recently posted poster.
Just a wild guess but maybe this is his daytime outdoors look,
suggesting that vampires need a lot of suntan lotion.
That's the only sensible explanation, reinforced by the sunglasses.

Since it's a horror comedy, it's more likely the audience is supposed to
be laughing.

No, not that one. GdT is making another one, he hated the one with
Eddie Murphy. He wants to make one that's closer to capturing the
spirit of the ride. Whether he succeeds or not is anyone's guess, but
this is the guy who made "Pan's Labyrinth." It's got to be better than
playing Dark Shadows for laughs.

The original was a soap opera, and a 1960s soap at that. It was actually
pretty good for it's time, but it was camp, not comedy, and if they're going
to give Barnabas clown makeup, they can count me out of their audience.

It should be pointed out it wasn't really camp, it was somewhat campy
due to the low budget for the show (read: no budget).

Hence you got such things like bat on a stick.

And the black construction paper "ghost".

And shadows that go the wrong direction, and microphones that appear on
screen.

Camp would be far better than "horror/comedy", in this case. The only thing
I can figure out is that they think they are going to get an entirely new
audience, because I doubt it's going to draw the old one.

Guillermo del Toro is doing a film version of the "Haunted Mansion"
ride at Disneyland. Maybe I'll start looking forward to that one
instead. At least I know it'll be spooky, dark, and atmospheric.
"Dark Shadows" as a horror comedy sounds awful...
It they're trying to ruin it, that sounds like a good start.
Not that the original was all that good to begin with...

Ah, ok. I never saw the original "Haunted Mansion".

I will note that he didn't look like that in the recently posted poster.
Just a wild guess but maybe this is his daytime outdoors look,
suggesting that vampires need a lot of suntan lotion.
That's the only sensible explanation, reinforced by the sunglasses.
Either that or it's a deliberate joke on the fans.
Since it's a horror comedy, it's more likely the audience is supposed to
be laughing.
Horror comedy?????

Uh, yeah...that was a "you've got to be kidding me" comment, not an "I don't
know what that is" comment.

Ah. Sorry about that. In that case, we are in agreement.

I guess this is the
Julia's-treatment-Barnabas below
Widow's HIll with Vickette?
Julia's devious plan: make Barnabas look totally unappealing so Vicki
will have nothing to do with him and Julia can have him all to herself
LOL!

"Yes, Barnabas, just slather this stuff on your face, it will work,
trust me..." <g>

Seriously, though, I agree that this is probably part of his treatment,
some sort of sunblock to protect him while he's being cured.

You really want to piss some people off, eh? :P
LOL, after this they're probably the one ones that will care.

There are days I'm really glad that Tim Burton said that I'm to never
ever watch another of his movies; this is one of them.

Okay now, I'm trying REALLY hard not to let this ruin it for me. Surely
this isn't indicative of how he's really going to look in the film. The
clothes look great, but the makeup? You're kidding me, right?

I'm... thinking that Burton's going the same direction as
Alice in Wonderland and Willie Wonka... Which is going to piss off
what little fans of Dark Shadows is left -- to positively no end.
Pretty much what I thought all along; I'm sad to be right.

Which sort of begs the question -- is this Burton's one-note
song? Taking things and making them bat-shit crazy and surreal with
the makeup and outrageously camp dialog? I mean, since his marriage
to Helena Bonham-Carter every live actions movie he's done since
"Nightmare Before Christmas" has been... well, outrageously camp to
the point it's like watching a drag queen performance.

Either that or he's completely regressed to the point of
infantilism... I can't be sure which really.
