Either that or it's a deliberate joke on the fans.
It may be the latter, but in the original Dark Shadows mythos, Barnabas
could not go outside in the daytime without dying.
Hence the totally opaque sunscreen.
Still looks like clown makeup to me.
Besides, I'm not sure sunscreen would help. It would depend on what part of
the suns rays does in vampires.
These days they have a lot of very good sunscreens that blend into the
skin. But for quite a while, the only really effective sunblock
contained LARGE particles of zinc oxide - which DID make it pretty
much look like white clown makeup. Usually it was only used on the
nose of a lifeguard, but I could definitely see it being used over the
entire body by a vampire. Now they use tiny particles of ZnO and it
doesn't appear white anymore.
From the wikipedia article:
Zinc oxide can be used in ointments, creams, and lotions to protect
against sunburn and other damage to the skin caused by ultraviolet
light (see sunscreen). It is the broadest spectrum UVA and UVB
reflector that is approved for use as a sunscreen by the FDA, and is
completely photostable. When used as an ingredient in sunscreen, zinc
oxide sits on the skins surface i.e. is not absorbed into the skin,
and blocks both UVA (320400 nm) and UVB (280320 nm) rays of
ultraviolet light. Because zinc oxide (and the other most common
physical sunscreen, titanium dioxide) are not absorbed into the skin,
they are nonirritating and nonallergenic.
Many sunscreens use nano-sized zinc oxide (along with nano titanium
dioxide) because such small particles do not scatter light and
therefore do not appear white.
