Revival series

I just watched the revival series again for the first time in many years
(rented it from Netflix), and pretty much had the same reactions to it
as I did when it first aired.

* Lysette Anthony was just as dreadfully one dimensional and
over-the-top as Angelique as I remembered - a huge casting misstep for
such a vital character.

* Got a big kick out of Jim Fyfe's lovably wacky portrayal of Willie.

* Thought Ben Cross and Joanna Going were very good as Barnabas and
Victoria/Josette. Wasn't fond of the overdone vampire eyes and fangs,
however.

* Mostly thought the various changes in the storyline worked pretty
well, especially the brilliant choice of making Vicki, rather than
Maggie, Josette's lookalike and possible reincarnation.

* Overall, thought it was very well-done and true to the spirit of the
original, although of course nothing could ever come close to it.

I was glad to see that it has held up as well, at least for me, after
all these years. Anyone else watch it again after a long time, and if
so, did your opinion change or stay about the same?

I enjoyed the revival series when it came out, but I was only slightly
familiar with the original series at the time. I was able to see most
of the original series during its run on SciFi several years ago, so I
might have a different opinion now.

I do not have to see the revival series again, to despise it. Ben
Cross was awful, the whole thing was awful.

In addition, i LOVED Barbara Steele as Dr. Hoffman and as Natalie Du
Pres.
Also, the Roger and Maggie thing was interesting. It would have been
neat to see how they went into the Laura Collins storyline had it not
been cancelled- because what little there was of it- they were going
to go there.

Of course it could never top the original- but in general- i enjoyed
the revival series.
just my two cents.
Hope you all are well.
Cheers!

I also loved the cliffhanger ending, with Vicki and Phyllis switched
back to their rightful places in time, and everyone standing around
Vicki's bed as she looked wide-eyed at Barnabas, both knowing that she
knew his secret.

I agree that it would have been interesting to see where it would have
gone if it hadn't been cancelled. Would Barnabas have been a threat to
Vicki as he was to Maggie in the original because she knew too much, or
would the fondness that they had begun to feel for one another have kept
her safe (a bond that wan't there between original Barnabas and Maggie)?
And what would his life be like in Collinsport? In the original, his
true nature was known to very few, but in the revival, by the end it
seemed that half the town had their suspicions about him.

If they did delve into the Laura storyline that they barely touched on,
an interesting twist would be for her, not Angelique, to show up as
Roger's new wife Cassandra. Not only would it make for some good soapy
melodrama when he realizes she's his own, twisted former wife, but even
better, it wouldn't necessitate bringing Lysette Anthony back (which can
only be a good thing LOL!)

Finally was able to get a copy from swapadvd.com, after having it on my
wish list for a while. Should be coming soon, it'll be a nice addition
to my collection!

i enjoy'd it enough to get the complete series on dvd in MY OPINION
the series failed=(A)they tried to do to much to fast instead of takeing
there time and developing the story. (B) and coverage from desert storm
one took over the tv. that being said i enjoyed the show well it
lasted and my gf watched it for her first time in dec and the way they
end'd the final ep throughly PO'D HER

Yes, the biggest problem with the revival was the rushing through it.
In the original, as with soaps in general, there was the luxury of time,
and they could take months and even years to develop a character and
tell a story, which makes for such rich storytelinng. The audience
really gets to know the characters and feel for them in a way you just
don't get in other mediums.

In all fairness, there was no way they could have gone that slowly in a
weekly 1-hour nighttime drama format and kept the audience's attention,
and they probably did as best as they could within those constraints. I
have a feeling that it might not have worked as well for us lifelong DS
fans if we weren't "projecting" our memories into it and mentally
filling in the gaps with our knowledge of the original. It would be
interesting to hear what newcomers/non DS fans thought of it on its own
merits.

All in all, I think the very best thing about the revival is that it
inspired a lot of people to check out the original.

In the early days of the original series, Carolyn had a tough-guy biker
boyfriend named Buzz.

Well, unfortunately I didn't get the revival series from swapadvd.com
after all, as the person who had it listed never sent it. I'm still
first on the wish list, so hopefully another copy will come along
