HOUSE OF DARK SHADOWS

Yeah, I know, I know. Saw it in a drive in as a teenager. Our dates
were scare through the whole thing and we tough boys were just laughing
right up until the end and ... it actually got scary.

Of course, there's creepy stuff all along, like David tossing the ball
in the abandoned swimmning pool chanting over and over again

If I catch this one, Caroline isn't deeaaaddd ...
If I catch this one, Caroline isn't deeaaaddd ...
If I catch this one, Caroline isn't deeaaaddd ...
If I catch this one, Caroline isn't deeaaaddd ...
If I catch this one, Caroline isn't deeaaaddd ...

'cause, you know, that's really something you might do at that age.

and Caroline isn't deeaaaddd ...

at least not completely.

Oberon:

I saw that at the theater first run, and that part was a bit creepy.
Plus Carolyn was my favorite female castmember, so, though she looked
rather nice in vamp-mode, it did bother me that she died and became a
vamp (and got staked, etc. etc.)

Yeah, the ending did seem to rivet me too!

When i saw "Phantasm" i was 11.
I avoided full length mirrors for YEARS after that LOL. And did have
nightmares about it.

Also- "Beyond the Door" at the Drive-In as a 2nd feature. Cheap
"Exorcist" rip-off, yes.. but when you're 10 or so, Holy Crap! Scared
the bejesus outa me!

But i grew up reading Famous Monsters and then eventually Fangoria- so
it got to where those things wouldn't scare me but i love the genre.
Recently i'd have to say the Unrated Director's Cut of "Drag Me to
Hell" really creeped me out though- and i'm 42 now.
Great flick.

Hope you all are well. Nice to pop by now and again.
Cheers!

"Creature From the Black Lagoon," first viewed around age 6 (c.
1962). When the soundtrack (written by Henry Mancini) blares as the
Gillman's hand emerges from the water to menace Julie Adams's naked
ankle...it would be years before I could listen to a brass section
without passing out.

Holy crap, that movie scared me too! I remember watching it on the CBS
Late Night Movie quite a few times, too.

It is simply breathtaking to watch the glee and abandon with which
the liberal media and the Angry Left have been attempting to turn
our military victory in Iraq into a second Vietnam quagmire. Too bad
for them, it's failing.

"The Sound of Music" scared the living shit out of me. I could never
look at Julie Andrews after it.

How about "Alien", folks?

The original "Night of the Living Dead" - the first time.

And now, for my version of an Aqaba attack: Ingmar Bergman's "The Passion
of Anna". Not anyone's idea of a "horror flick", but it despite its
occasional pretensions it actually made me think, "My gawd, is this what
we're actually like?"

"The Shining" still gets to me after countless viewings. All that's
left unexplained (what's real and what's just Jack's madness, and is he
actually the oriignal caretaker reincarnated?) just serves to make it
that much more creepy and disturbing. Probably my favorite horror film
of all time.

"The Blair Witch Project" was genuinely terrifying, even more so because
you never "saw" anything, it was just the growing sense of dread among
the three ill-fated campers. No buckets of blood and gore could have
been more gut-wrenchingly horrifying than the final scene when we see
the young man simply standing in the corner...

The original "Halloween" was a masterpiece of horror. The eerie music,
a likeable, believable and intelligent heroine that you genuinely cared
about, and brilliant direction by John Carpenter made for a truly scary
movie experience. It's ironic that it's often cited as the originator
of the modern "slasher flick" genre, because the violence is
surprisingly non-graphic.

"The Hitcher" was another one of those films that really got under my
skin with psychological terror vs. overt violence. Rutger Hauer is one
of the creepiest screen villains ever.

I haven't seen the original "When A Stranger Calls" for years, and don't
remember many of the details, but I will never forget how, when the
police called Carol Kane's babysitter character back and said they had
traced the threatening phone calls from inside the house, it was all
over for me! :)

"The Silence of the Lambs." Anthony Hopikins. "Nuff said...
