Over at www.aintitcool.com there is a review from a supposedly good
reviewer who says it is not a comedy at all.
I urge you to find and read that review. There are some small
spoilers, but actually nothing most of would not find unexpected;
elements of the story line in some form or another. The reviewer
applauds several of the performances and explains resonances between
the series and the film with the score and other elements.

Thanks for the post.

This review is too overly positive. 'Too good to be true' is the
expression coming to mind to me. Everything in that review is exactly
what I want to hear... which is why I don't believe it.

I'm mixed on this movie. I typically don't enjoy comedies, and the
trailer makes me want to avoid this movie altogether. On the other
hand, it might have enough drama to make it a good movie -- just have
to wait and see.

The one thing that is good, I think, is the movie might attract new
people who become interested enough to watch the original series. With
new fans, it will keep Dark Shadows alive for many more years to come.

I'm not going to read the review as I don't want to see even minor spoilers. However, the fact the someone who has seen it says it is not a comedy is encouraging.
