If I'm not mistaken, DVD gives you the maximum resolution available from an
old video source, so BluRay would be a waste of money.

Well, yes- definitely.
But we have recently purchased Blu Ray player (in the form of a PS3
that is) and i gotta say.. even my regular dvds look amazing on this
thing! Sharper and more brillliant and the sound quality is tops.
I've even watched some DS on it.. and there is slight, but very
noticeable, improvment in regard to colors and such. The colors really
pop.

That being said- it'd be a waste of resources to release them on Blu
Ray i think, being as it took quite a while for all to eventually come
to dvd.
Not to mention all the thousands of dollars some of us may have spent
buying said dvds. A Blu Ray release would be a waste, imo. There are
so many other things that have yet to come to BR let alone an entire
series of 1000 plus episodes.
Maybe many years down the road........ who can say. I wouldn't rule it
out completely.

Sort of. Film is still way higher quality than Blu-ray, so, for
instance, a 1960s TV show finished on film (Bonanza, real Star Trek) can
be remastered to look great. A TV show finished on standard def video
tape (Dark Shadows, Star Trek TNG) is already below the resolution
possible on standard DVD, and there's no reason to put it on Blu-ray
expecting a better visual. You could, however, put a ton of standard
DVD resolution Dark Shadows episodes on one Blu-ray disc, but that would
be about it.

We have been SO lovin' our PS3! We'd been putting off getting one cuz

Been playing "Dead Space" recently. Spooooky ass game, honestly.
Nightmarish- but we love the horror survival games (Silent Hill,
etc.). Also "Little Big Planet" is tremendous fun. Limitless as your
imagination and cute without being sickeningly cute.

Add to that the fact that this thing has 80 gigs, plays and can store
music and pictures.. browse the web, watch dvd and BR discs.
It's pretty nice to be able to watch You Tube stuffs on my big tv i
must say. It's sort of an "all in one" entertaiment center in many
ways.

My understaning though is the PS3, WII, and x box 360 are taking
a huge hit in sales, as the bulk of games being purchased are not
for these sytemss but are for the Iphone.

so any series could be released on Bluray. Several old movies, even Robin
Hood from the 1940s, have been released and look fantastic. Wizard of Oz
comes out next month on Bluray so Dark Shadows, like the original Star Trek
(which is released on Bluray in 2009 and the first season on HD DVD in '07),
would benefit greatly from an HD release. It's just about numbers...Are
there enough people that would buy it? People said the same thing about VHS
after spending all their money on video tape copies but the DVDs have sold
well. I think there are enough Dark Shadows fans who have money that it
would sell well on Bluray.

I suppose you're talking about the remake, which was filmed? The original
series was videotaped, and would not benefit much from being put onto

was shot on video tape.

They spent millions of dollars retooling those episodes.

If you saw the refurbished episodes they look much

quality than HD is not true. Ever see a Super 8 home movie?

Yes, showing a Super 8 home movie in BluRay would provide the highest
resolution of a grainy film, better than a regular DVD, making it worth
it, as it would be with any film. Providing the best film and sound
sources is essential, and restoring the film first is an important
option.

Yes, it's true, putting standard resolution video tape sources onto
BluRay is a waste of time and will not provide a true HD picture. Filmed
episodes of a show that was filmed (and the original film still exists,
not videotapes of the filmed show) should be remastered in HD and put on
BluRay if there is a market for it.

The only time the original Dark Shadows episodes made in 1966 to 1971
would benifit a little for a remastering in HD would be the kinoscopes,
as long as they went to the actual reels of film and did it directly
from them, NOT videotapes of the kinoscopes. All you would be getting
are slightly clearer pictures of poorly shot film in black and white of
a TV screen.

You are mistaken. Film quality is better than HD. Best example is
comparing Star Trek TOS on standard DVD to the Bluray release. I have both
and there is no comparison, Bluray wins by a landslide. TOS is stunning on
Bluray. I think with Dark Shadow's exuberant colors that it would also look
stunning on Bluray. Like with DVD, hopefully it will happen. If there are

You are forgetting how much capacity a bluray has. You could probably
release the whole series of Dark Shadows on 10 volumes of Bluray instead of
the 33 DVD volumes. Maybe less than that. They could probably still
remaster Dark Shadows and upconvert it to make it look better than it does
on DVD but if nothing else I do know it would save us all some space in our
DVD holders to release the series on Bluray. I would buy it for that as
well as all the extras they could fit on each one, and with BD live, the
possibilites are endless especially with the new Burton film on the horizon.

I estimate you could get DS on blu-ray with about 10-12 volumes.
Probably a slight enhancement but not much.
Blu-Ray players had come down in retail price quite a bit but their
sales are slow. Probably because DVDs are downwardly compatible and
you really need a Hi-Def tuner and programming to really appreciate
blu-ray.... for starters. If and when stand-alone, table-top blu-ray
recorders hit the market then blu-ray will reaally begin to take off.

years ago, i was fortunate enough to buy all the episodes on VHS from
someone here. Some episodes had commercials on them, and i actually
appreciate that because I like seeing commercials I remember from many
years ago.
