On tonight's MTV Movie Awards, Johnny Depp was presented with the
Generation award for his body of work over the years, by Aerosmith's
Steven Tyler and Joe Perry.

They showed clips of many of his films, including DS, and he jammed with
The Black Keys on a song before accepting his award. After watching the
clips, he joked that there was clearly something wrong with him <g>

I do find it amusing that such a pretty boy actor has turned out to be
such a "freak" in real life, and has focused on such non-pretty boy
roles, for the most part.

Did they show his police records from Miramar, FL and also his suspension
records from Miramar HS/Broward County Schools? As a retired teacher here
in South Florida, I have heard all the stories about Depp and what a pain in
the ass he was to the schools and the cops.

Judy,
Depp lived in Miramar, FL, the community right above the Dade County line,
in Broward County. He went to Miramar HS. He got into several scrapes with
the Miramar cops, and even the Broward County Sheriff's office(the same one
that is almost always seen on "Cops"). He was suspended several times, his
mug shot is on the web somewhere, you can Google it.
I am a retired teacher, who taught in Dade, Broward and finally Palm Beach
County. When he hit it big in "21 Jump Street", teachers and cops usually
laughed and said how weird that Depp was playing a cop, and not the
criminal!
Perhaps that is why he has never returned to South Florida, but he paid his
dues and went on to a new, successful career in movies.

I think the fact that he was honored with an award while you weren't
shows that he has grown out of any of the problems in his troubled
youth. He has done pretty well with his life. The fact that he may
have started out in a bad way just gave him a longer road to travel
and made his journey that much more remarkable.

Errr...not to get into the middle of what seems like a rather silly
argument here, but do you really consider "dipstick" to be profane? Do
you know what a dipstick is? In case not, you can find a definition here:

Cool. I am really behind the times, my phone is just that, an old
Motorola V180, voice only, no data. Damn, if those data plans were less
expensive, I might go for one of them. One of my step-sons, 28, can't
even carry on a family conversation over dinner without his eyes being
glued to his "smart phone". Always texting, game playing, Facebooking,
etc. I used to think that playing my old DOS RPG games was engrossing,
but this is ridiculous!(Still play Panzer General on an old 486 laptop).

Heh, I can relate. I just have a TracFone cell, to carry for
emergencies or otherwise need to make a call away from home. Really see
no big need for more than that right now. We're also still on dial-up
computer service, which I would definitely love to someday upgrade to
high-speed, especially for the ability to watch YouTube videos. Not in
a big hurry to change, but definitely sometime in the future...the main
thing is we'd definitely miss WebTV, which we get along with MSN
computer service in one plan.

One bit of technology item I absolutely love is my Kindle. I hesitated
for a long time, but my hubby got me one last year and I adore it! Was
even able to get the Kindle version of Craig Hamrick's "Barnabas And
Company" book for something like 3 bucks, and there are TONS of free
books available, I read a couple of daily blogs that feature several
Kindle e-books that are available either for free or under a dollar, for
a limited time, not to mention all the classic books that are public
domain and free. Kindle also has a Daily Deal, where one book each day
is offered at a majorly discounted price, usually somewhere from 99
cents to 1.99. Another feature I love is that you can download a free
sample of any Kindle book to see if you like it before ordering, usually
at least a chapter or more, definitely enough to get a feel for the
book. There are also games and other apps (I have a great calendar app
that I put all my appointments, etc. into), and since I have the 3G
version, I can use it to go online and check Twitter, Hotmail and other
stuff on the web. I'd definitely recommend it to anyone.

Hi Diva,
Wow, WebTV, are they still in business? My wife and I gave up dial-up
years ago, went for DSL in a bundle from Bellsouth; home phone,
DirecTV,DSL.
LOL! I can understand your TracFone, that is what Alexander Graham Bell
designed the thing for! I heard that "voice only" will become an
"option" in the future, can you believe that!
Kindle sounds great, I just cannot give up holding a hefty book, turning
the pages an displaying them on my bookshelf! A laptop/netbook is the
smallest CPU that I can go for, still use a mouse(hate touchpads).
I do know that Amazon does offer huge deals on eBooks, low prices on
books that I would like to have. My Linux computers have an eBook reader
app that can, theoretically, download and read them. Don't know if they
are proprietary, and if you need a Kindle to buy them. We have an Amazon
account, so maybe it will work!
BTW, I still have about 5 of my Dark Shadows comic books, I used to have
all of them, the old "blooper" VHS tape from the show, and some old mags
with interviews of the cast, from the 70's.

Amazon has free apps for reading Kindle books on PCs and on devices like
phones and tablets, so you don't have to have a Kindle to read Kindle
books if you have a device you're comfortable reading from.

have started out in a bad way just gave him a longer road to travel
and made his journey that much more remarkable.

Did they show his police records from Miramar, FL and also his
suspension records from Miramar HS/Broward County Schools? As a
retired teacher here in South Florida, I have heard all the stories
about Depp and what a pain in the ass he was to the schools and the
cops.
I have been honored with several teaching awards, dipstick. You don't
know me, so don't shoot your mouth off hiding behind anonymous
handles. I agree, he to his life together and moved on, good for him.
I simply mentioned that he was not always the idol that so many here
think he is,
or was in the past.
Errr...not to get into the middle of what seems like a rather silly
argument here, but do you really consider "dipstick" to be profane? Do
http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/dipstick?s=t
Now if you want to see profane, come visit us in alt.horror.
By the way, the custom on USENET is to post your reply BELOW the message
to which you are replying. Top posting makes it hard to follow
conversations.
I do not think that this person understands USENET. This is an
unmoderated group, of which there are many! I infer that he thinks that
this is like a "web forum" with a host, password, and rules of
netiquette. USENET is definitely not that place! What is alt.horror
like? Might take a stroll over there and have a look!
I would note that my usenet service provider has a host, requires a
password. And they rules for users to abide by. ("Service
agreement")

Is alt.horror still dominated by snarky British posters? I used to visit there years ago, but it seemed that they spent little time actually discussing, you know, horror.

We're pretty evenly split between snarky Brits, snarky Australians and
snarky Americans. We do discuss quite a bit of horror, but it's also
quite a bit like a social club, and regulars often post off topic
material, mainly for ***@ts and giggles. I started hanging out there just
to learn of new horror films, and I have, indeed, learned of many of
those. But I've also made some friends there who have become pretty
close (in spite of our great distances apart). A few of them came to my
aid during a very dark time of my life, and I consider them true
friends. But we call each other c&^%s. Alt.horror has it's own, unique
culture, and many would find it offensive, but we're (mostly) all good
people at heart.

It's been a number of years since I used to visit there. I took a quick peek after I posted my message and it does appear that there are a lot of threads on topic, so maybe I'll check it out more.

We always (well, mostly) welcome new or returning members. If the
particular culture isn't a turn off, you might enjoy it.

Kishin,
Just subscribed to alt.horror, and it seems to be a very interesting
place! Lots of "On Topic" reviews, looks like I will be lurking for
awhile! Thanks for the heads-up.

Cool! Nice to have you there. Feel free to post once you've got a feel
for the group. I can't go into too much detail here, but you'll see what
I mean. Wait till you meet "The White Lady."

It's unfortunate that he is too busy being successful to scrutinize the
past of every nobody the way you scrutinize his. Who are you to take
shots at people you don't know? Is that the value system teachers are
imparting upon the younger generations? It would sure explain a lot.
Using profane personal insults on a public forum is another facet of
your shameful display, which demonstrates the prevalent lack of
character in school faculties across the country. Perhaps if teachers
spent more time teaching math and language skills ...
But since you are so delusional that you clearly expect some sort of
apology here, allow me to say I'm so sorry I interrupted your psychotic
attack and attempts to defame Johnny Depp. He'll never know you exist.

You are delusional, and in the KF you go. If you think that "dipstick" is
profane, you must live a very sheltered life. "Shameful displays on a
public forum", how long have you been on USENET? I have been around
since the 80's, and believe me, there are much, much worse places and
people(check out comp.os.linux.advocacy, for example) and characters like
"DanC". BTW, I don't expect, nor want your "apology" and how do you know
that I haven't met/seen Johnny Depp? As I said, I am a retired teacher,
and as far as you "don't know" might have even seen him at Miramar HS.
You need to get off your high-horse and come down from your ivory tree-
house.
