Well, as I mentioned before, I got the two compilation DVDs - The
Vampire Curse and Haunting of Collinwood - for Christmas. I've already
watched The Vampire Curse, and as promised, here's my little review of
it.

The DVD is a compilation of scenes, edited together to tell the story of
Barnabas' vampire curse, starting at Josette's arrival at Collinwood,
through to Barnabas being chained in his coffin, and ending with the
first scenes of Barnabas arriving in present-day Collinwood, released
from his coffin by Willie and introducing himself to Elizabeth.

It spans the storyline in about 3-1/2 hours, focusing on the
Barnabas/Josette/Angelique triangle and the vampire curse, ignoring the
other storylines of 1795. There's also a bonus complete episode, a
Jonathan Frid interview, and a KLS DS promo.

I think the DVD is an excellent overview of this storyline, and is a
fun, streamlined way to watch the highlights when you don't have the
time to watch dozens and dozens of complete episodes. The scenes mostly
seemed to flow fairly seamlessly, and didn't seem jarring or haphazard
in the editing.

I'd recommend it, especially if you, like me, are a fan of the 1795 era.
I'll report back when I've watched the Quentin-based DVD, Haunting of
Collinwood.

Watched The Haunting of Collinwood, and much like the Vampire Curse, it
was about 3-1/2 hours of scenes that told the story of Quentin's
possession of Davd and Amy, starting with the children discovering the
gramophone and "meeting" Quentin, and ending with Quentin having
successfully driven the family from Collinwood. Like the other DVD,
there are also special features.

I've mentioned before that I would love to see the entire series edited
in a similar consolidated format on a few discs, using key scenes with
possibly some time-savng explanatory narration in between (these DVDs
did not have this). This is probably as close as we'll come to having
that, and I wasn't disappointed. Yes, ideally, for the Barnabas one,
they would have done 2 discs and included all the 1795 subplots (and for
Quentin, spanned his whole run on the show, or at least focused on a
more interesting aspect of him than his "stand there and smirk" ghostly
appearances) , but still, they're a fun way to watch key scenes without
having to go through hours of complete episodes when you don't have the
time or inclination.

Maybe if these sell well enough, MPI will consider giving other
storylines the same treatment. I think the pre-Barnabas stuff would
make an interesting one, as well as the final "lottery" storyline with
Bramwell, Catherine, etc.
