Wow, never knew about the novels & seems there were many! Knew about the
2 (?) movies (House Of Dark Shadows & another one I can't remember the
title of). I think they had Barnabas' ring (copy) out there, too. I've
never gone to a DS event, so I'm sure there's lots more stuff, too.

Wow! Just looked on Ebay, and was surprized at how many things are
listed there under DS & Jonathan Frid (didn't look under other listings,
of the other Actors).

Yes, there were a lot of different DS collectibles. Many years ago,
someone gave me the old Dark Shadows board game, which was a very cool
thing!

One of the most popular items is the Josette's Music Box. I don't have
one of those original replicas, but I do have a small silver-plated
music box that plays Josette's Theme.

The dealers rooms at the DS Fests are a real treasure trove, so much fun
to look around at all the goodies for sale! :)

Did you play the game? Was it any good?

Oberon: During its heyday, Dark Shadows had an incredible amount of
merchandise.

In addition to the Dark Shadows board game there was a MIlton Bradley
(I believe) 'Barnabas Collins' board game.
I never got that one, but like others I LOVED THE DS game. Sadly, I
believe it stayed at my parents house(s) and somewhere down the way,
it was discarded. Could have molded too; my parents were bad for
that...

There were two DS games
Thee was a Gold Key comic series that lasted years longer than the
show.
There were over 30 of those DS novels
There was a comic strip towards the end of the show, or maybe it came
after the show? The artwork was pretty good.Liz and Carolyn were the
only Collins members present in the strip as I recall.

A number of the actors appeared on the typical day/evening variety
shows of that era: the one I remember is a show with Dennis Wholey
(sic) that was sorta a game/quiz show.

Here is how I remember it: David Hennessy was one of the contestants
(three altogether). At some point the question involves DS, and then
all of a sudden there is 'set' that looks like DS, with fog swirling
and such, and then Barnabas walks through the fog, he is splendidly
made up and he walks up the host and in his best evil voice he says"
What is your Blood type?"

great memories

It was well over 20 years ago that someone gave it to me, so I don't
remember if I actually played it or not! I should get it off the shelf
and check it out again.

Yeah, there was a ton of merchandising back in the day, and still new
and reissue stuff today. You can get the Barnabas ring and his cane,
too. Not too long ago, I posted a link to my autographed photo
collection. Some were signed for me (I blurred my name on them) and
others I got on Ebay and they were signed for other people, or no one at
all.

The Alpacca silver wolf cane used in the original TV series has always
been available from the same manufacturer. I've purchased two over the
years. One for $100 and the other for a little more. They are selling
like hotcakes on eBay now for north of $400 (prices obviously driven
up by the new movie).

I think the real reason they have modified the cane slightly for the
movie is so that the movie studio can own the merchandising rights.
They can't claim the rights to something that's been on the market for
over 40 years.

Of the promotional items for the new movie, the ring is probably the
cheesiest. It's a mood ring, which is an interesting twist, but the
faux stone is flat, instead of concave, and the band is soldered so
that the ring size can't be adjusted.

There has been a feeding frenzy for the new movie items on eBay, with
some items, like one lava lamp, going for over $400. Some of these
items may eventually make it to wbshop.com for less outrageous prices.
The studio is tight-lipped about how many are left over.

My very first post to Usenet, and I botched it: I meant to say the
original ring had a convex stone, not concave. I was correct about the
new promotional ring having a flat stone, in that it neither bulges
out nor in.

Does anybody know how many of these promotional items were made for
the release of the movie? The items with the release date were likely
not made with a future in retail in mind. These appears to be a very
"short run" production. The $400 for the lava lamp on eBay might not
seem so rediculous if it turns out that they only had 100 made for the
after-premiere party. But that same $400 might turn out to be painful
to the new owner if the lava lamps show up in the store for $19.99 as
a retail price.

Lava Lamps (new) can be purchased for about $20., here in L.A., at a
store called, "Aahs" (I think that's how you spell it). The ones from
the '60's would probably be higher, if you can find a working one - Ebay
(?)!

Yes, but are they the ones that have "Dark Shadows" printed on them?

I've still got a Lava Lamp that I bought around 1985 at Spencer's Gifts.

Hmmm? I wonder how many original '60's Lava Lamps are out there, still
working?
