Who reads the DS comics, novels, etc.?

Or partakes of any other DS media? Since I asked I'll go first.

Well since the original running I was about all things Dark Shadows,
so I began buying the novels. Originally I never found the first 2 or
3; already published a year before I started and out of print. Later I
found them in small used book stores. But I remember my 15th birthday,
my godmother bought me (I believe) "Barnabas Collins and the Gypsy
Witch". Which I loved. I liked a lot of them, especially the one or
two where some actual time travel took place ("Barnabas, Quentin and
the Nightmare Assassin" - Where a car accident at Christmas time sends
Barnabas and Carolyn back to an earlier version of the family and a
murder mystery)
Around that time Gold Key comics put out an official version and the
the first 2 or 3 issues had a great pull out poster. The first one had
Barnabas, of course.
There was also an ongoing comic strip in the newspaper with a
colorful Sunday/weekday edition. Years later it was collected into a
trade paper back, but I remember cutting out the color ones and
putting them in a scrapbook (which I have no idea what ever happened
to!). I liked the Werewolf story and the Egyptian one, where it is
revealed that Osiris' spirit is also inside Barnabas' body (or
something like that).

In more recent years I've bought some of the Big Finish audios, and
they too have been great. More on that in a follow up. Anyone else?

I have all of the Marilyn/Dan Ross novels. Yes, they definitely have
those Scooby Doo-type mysteries and resolutions, and all end in about
the same way (spoiler space after this post), but they're fun!

I also read a couple of Lara Parker's novels, and have most of KLS'
Pomegranate Press DS-related books. I have the wonderful 'Beginnngs"
novel, about Josette and Angelique growing up together on Martinique, by
Kathy Resch and Marcy Robin, and one or two of the comic books they came
out with around the time of the revival series.

One thing that was so much fun was The World Of Dark Shadows fanzine,
which had lots of great DS fanfic, poetry, artwork, etc. I contributed
some stories to it as well, and I always looked forward eagerly to each
new issue - there are a lot of very talented fans out there.

In the Ross novels, Barnabas falls in love with the heroine, but at the
end, after whatever danger they were fighting is over, she goes to the
Old House to see him, only to find the place deserted and a note from
Barnabas saying that he loves her, but has left because he won't tie her
down to the kind of life he's forced to live. To the best of my
recollection, virtually all the books (with the exception of the early
non-Barnabas ones) end with some variation of that scenario! :)

I started collecting and reading the novels right away, but somehow
got bogged down with college stuff after the first dozen or so. I seem
to remember I bought them anyway, at least up until about #25 or #26.
I know I'm missing only the last two or three that came out after
that.

Do you happen to know how many novels were published? I can crawl up
into the attic and drag what I have down to check which numbers I have
and then I can figure out which ones I'm missing.

Lucky you to have found the first ones! No used book stores around
here anymore, so I know finding the last couple I'm missing will be
a lost cause.

I *think* I may have seen the first comic, but I don't remember buying
it.

I have the vinyl LP version of the music with Barnabas and Quentin on the
cover. I notice that they've re-issued it on CD now. Dunno if I'll spring
for it though. Gotta draw the line somewhere. lol I seem to remember
buying the 45 of Josette's theme, so that should be somewhere in the closet
along with the other 45s gathering dust.

Today's collectables are tomorrow's garage sale treasures!

I'm almost positive there were 32 regular Ross novels, plus the four
special editions - the HODS novelization, Barnabas Collins: In A Funny
Vein, Barnabas Collins Personal Picture Album, and the Barnabas and
Quentin Book Of Vampires And Werewolves.

Thanks, Diva.

I think I stopped buying them around #26 or so. I simply didn't have
time to read 'em all (I was in grad school by then), plus they didn't
really follow the series very well. Cookie-cutter comes to mind.

I'll have to root around in the attic sometime this weekend while
the weather isn't too unbearably hot to see if I can find them all.

If mission is accomplished, I will report in later. lol

I miss OLTL, but have not been able to watch GH regularly.

I did think there were 30 some novels from the old Marion Ross DS.
Yes, Diva,

they all ended that way, more or less. With the little "gothic"
romance reading I have done elsewhere, I would say some authors who
just churn it out, all follow similar formulas.

I never was able to pick up the Pomegranate press offerings; probably
my leaner years.

I am also remembering that during or just after the '90s revival,
there was a comic book series that tied in. Might have been Innovative
comics, but I don't remember it that well; only bought a couple of
issues.

Spinelli was my very first thought. At first i said it stupidly and
blindly- but the more she talked. i was like... oh yeah! PLUS, it is
an Italian name and i *think* (could be wrong), Spinellii said he was
adopted. GREAT acting on the part of the gal who plays Kate. During
the scene of her remembering her rape- she was so real and gut
wrenching. Good actress!!

Yes... tea.. Hmmm.. i always tried to avoid it. i'm on Beta Blocker as

I have most of the Pomegranate books, but have only tried reading one
novel, "Angelique's Descent," by Lara Parker. I couldn't get into it and
never finished it. But I am intrigued by her new one about Quentin.

I also have a soundtrack CD, but that's about it, aside from the whole
series on DVD.

I bought all of the Gold Key DS comics up until the last several... the fact that the comics kept coming for years after the series was abruptly cancelled meamt a lot, although of course the stories were obviously in some weird alternate universe... which was common in Collinwood, anyhow!

The paperback novels looked great but as I recall had even less to do with the TV show than the comics!
