The project from Warner Bros. TV would continue the story of the cult soap
opera, which first aired in 1966.
The CW is taking another crack at Dark Shadows.
The network and Warner Bros. TV are developing a modern update of the Gothic
soap, which originally aired as an ABC daytime serial from 1966-71. The new
version, titled Dark Shadows: Reincarnation, would be a present-day
continuation of the story, which centers on the supernaturally afflicted
Collins family.
Mark B. Perry (Revenge, Ghost Whisperer), a self-professed fan of the
original series, is writing the pilot. He will executive produce with Amasia
Entertainment's Michael Helfant, Bradley Gallo and Tracy Mercer, as well as
Tracy and Cathy Curtis, the daughters of series creator Dan Curtis.
The reimagined show would continue the strange, terrifying and sexy saga of
the Collins family of Collinsport, Maine a mysterious, influential and
publicity-shy group hiding a ghastly secret: For the past 400 years, they've
lived under a curse that bedevils their blue blood with every imaginable
supernatural creature and horror.
The original series had a cult following, and several attempts at revivals
and reboots have followed in the years since. NBC aired a short-lived version
in 1991, and The WB (a predecessor to The CW) and Warner Bros. TV made a
pilot for a new version of the show that didn't go to series.
Tim Burton also directed a comedic feature-film take on the show in 2012,
with Johnny Depp starring as lead character Barnabas Collins.
Dark Shadows follows the CW blueprint of using established IP as the basis
for series. The network has six shows based on DC Comics properties, plus
Riverdale (based on the Archie Comics) and the forthcoming spinoff Katy Keene
and a new take on Nancy Drew set to debut in October. Second-year series
Legacies is the third show in the Vampire Diaries franchise, and Roswell, New
Mexico is a reboot of the 1999-2002 WB/UPN show.
